What’s happening at this stage

The second year opens with a trap: around the first birthday, walking, first words and separation anxiety can wreck sleep for a couple of weeks — and it looks exactly like nap-drop readiness. It usually isn’t. Most toddlers keep needing two naps until roughly 13–15 months.

When the real 2-to-1 transition arrives (second nap consistently refused for weeks, first nap stretching), move gradually: push the morning nap later in steps until it lands midday, and lean on an earlier bedtime while the day recalibrates. The single nap then anchors “after lunch”.

Three things that help right now

  • A 12-month sleep wobble = regression first, nap change second. Wait it out before dropping anything.
  • During the 2→1 transition, an extra-early bedtime is your best friend for a few weeks.
  • Once on one nap, guard it around midday — late naps steal bedtime.
